About the Position

The University of Bergen invites applications for a PhD Research Fellow in Tectonics and Basin Analysis. This exciting research role is hosted by the Department of Earth Science in collaboration with the University Museum of Bergen. The project focuses on source–sink dynamics in the northeastern North Sea and is part of a research initiative funded by major industry partners.

This is an exceptional opportunity for early-career geoscientists to explore advanced concepts in structural geology, basin modeling, seismic interpretation, and landscape evolution over geological timescales.


Research Project Overview

The aim is to understand the linkage between onshore erosion (source) and offshore sediment deposition (sink) from the Triassic to Cretaceous periods in the North Sea. You’ll work with:

  • 3D seismic data and borehole calibration
  • Restoration tools and crustal modeling
  • Thermochronometric and provenance datasets
  • Industry collaboration and data exchange

You’ll be expected to present at international conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.


What You Need

  • Master’s degree in Earth Science (or equivalent; must be completed before start date)
  • Strong background in structural geology and basin analysis
  • Experience in seismic interpretation (preferably with Petrel software)
  • Knowledge in thermochronometry, restoration techniques, or landscape modeling (preferred)
  • Excellent English communication skills
