About the Project

Positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) are critical for modern transportation, logistics, defence, and critical infrastructure. However, reliance on GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) leaves systems vulnerable to interference, spoofing, and cyber-physical threats.

This PhD project seeks to:

  • Develop versatile benchmarks for multi-domain PNT systems.

  • Incorporate data from space-based, terrestrial, and platform-based navigation sources.

  • Establish advanced integrity frameworks for evaluation.

  • Deliver trustworthy and certifiable navigation solutions in complex, GNSS-denied scenarios.

The research will advance cognitive, multi-domain navigation approaches—vital for applications such as urban air mobility, aerospace systems, and defence operations.

Research Environment at Cranfield

  • Based in the Resilient PNT Research Group, which leads pioneering work in sensor fusion, system integrity, and autonomous navigation.

  • Access to state-of-the-art testbeds and software-defined radio platforms.

  • Opportunities to collaborate with industry, join experimental campaigns, and publish in leading journals and conferences.

  • Integration into the Cranfield Doctoral Network, providing a professional, interdisciplinary research community with networking, seminars, and transferable skills training.

Candidate Profile & Entry Requirements

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • A strong foundation in materials science, physics, electronics, or computing.

  • Hands-on experience with sensor modalities and hardware platforms.

  • Advanced programming skills (C/C++, Python, Rust).

  • Experience in signal processing, fusion, machine learning, robotics, or autonomous systems.

  • Knowledge of statistical analysis and data analytics.

Eligibility: Open to UK, EU, and international applicants.
