Role Overview
European XFEL is looking for an experienced and creative Scientific Writer / Communication Officer to join its Communication Group. In this role, you’ll play a vital part in sharing the organization’s scientific breakthroughs and activities with both public and professional audiences through compelling storytelling and strategic outreach.
Key Responsibilities

Write press releases, news stories, website content, brochures, posters, and other communication materials in English and German

Build and maintain media relations and monitor press coverage

Develop and implement communication strategies in coordination with the team lead

Organize media events and facilitate interviews

Edit and manage publications such as the Annual Report

Update and manage content on the European XFEL website

Collaborate with the Social Media Manager and cover their responsibilities during absences

Coordinate communication with partner institutions and PR teams

Support broader communication and education initiatives
Who Should Apply

University degree in journalism, communications, or a scientific field
-
Proven experience in science journalism or public relations

Strong writing and editing skills (writing samples required)

Native-level proficiency in English or German (with excellent command of the other)

Ability to explain complex scientific concepts to non-experts

Skilled in managing multiple projects under tight deadlines

Familiarity with digital platforms, social media, and MS Office

Organized, independent, and proactive communicator
