About the Fellowship

The Humboldt Research Fellowship supports postdoctoral and experienced researchers from around the world to carry out self-directed research in Germany. With full financial support, flexible research timeframes, and access to top-tier institutions, this program is designed to foster long-term academic collaboration and innovation.

The fellowship allows researchers to work on a project of their choice in cooperation with an academic host in Germany. Fields of research include natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and the humanities.


Who Can Apply?

Postdoctoral Researchers:

  • Doctorate completed within the past 4 years (or 6 months from completion)
  • Strong academic record with publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Research proposal of high academic quality

Experienced Researchers:

  • Doctorate completed within the last 12 years (or 16 years in specific fields)
  • Extensive publication record and established academic profile

Note: Researchers from Brazil must apply through the CAPES-Humboldt Fellowship. Researchers working on sustainability may consider the Georg Forster Research Fellowship.


What Does the Fellowship Include?

  • Monthly stipend of €2,700 (postdocs) or €3,200 (experienced researchers)

How to Apply

You must apply online via the official Humboldt Foundation portal. The following documents are required:

  • Curriculum vitae (max 2 pages)
  • Detailed research proposal (max 5 pages)
  • Complete list of publications + selection of key publications
  • Doctoral certificate or statement of expected completion
  • Host institution statement + two academic reference letters (uploaded separately)

Selection Process

Applications are reviewed by expert peer reviewers and selection committees. Evaluation is based on academic achievements, quality and feasibility of the proposed project, the applicant’s future potential, and the research fit with the host institution.

Selection meetings take place in March, July, and November. Processing time is typically 4–8 months. Applicants are notified of results within 1–3 days of the selection meeting.
