HOPE Meetings with Nobel Laureates – A Unique Opportunity for Young Researchers

The HOPE Meetings organized by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) offer a prestigious platform for young researchers and PhD students from the Asia-Pacific and Africa regions. Since 2008, these meetings have been empowering future scientists through direct interaction with Nobel Laureates and other distinguished researchers.

Purpose of HOPE Meetings

The core aim is to advance science and technology by nurturing young talent with broad, interdisciplinary perspectives and high moral values, rooted in regional cultures. “HOPE” symbolizes optimism for the scientific future and the potential of emerging researchers.


Program Highlights

Participants engage in:

  • Lectures by Nobel Laureates in physics, chemistry, and physiology/medicine

  • Seminar-style discussions in small groups

  • Poster sessions to present individual research

  • Oral presentations by multinational participant teams

  • Cultural experiences, including excursions to research facilities and heritage sites

Eligibility Criteria

Participants from Japan:

  • PhD students or researchers who received their PhD within the last 5 years

  • Must be affiliated with a university or research institution in Japan or abroad

  • Maternity, paternity, and childcare leave periods are excluded from the 5-year limit

Selection Process – Japan Participants

  1. September: Application deadline

  2. October: Document review by organizing committee

  3. November: Panel review

  4. December: Results announced

Foreigners affiliated with Japanese research institutions may also apply under this category.


Selection Process – Overseas Nominees

If you’re applying from outside Japan:

  1. Contact the Overseas Nominating Institution in your country

  2. June–July: JSPS invites nominations

  3. July–October: Institutions recommend nominees

  4. November: Final approval by JSPS

  5. December: Results announced

Participant Responsibilities

  • Submit all required documents and abstracts

  • Attend all sessions during the meeting

Costs Covered by JSPS (For Participants from Japan)

  • Travel within Japan between the affiliated institution and venue

  • Accommodation, meals, and other event-related expenses

  • Participation is free of charge.
