Shape the Future of Wildlife Management – Join as a Postdoc at NIOO-KNAW

The Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) is calling for applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher to lead a key component of an international project on the adaptive management of geese. This exciting opportunity allows you to work at the forefront of ecological research with real-world policy implications.

The Research Focus

As part of a consortium, NIOO-KNAW is developing predictive models of goose grazing behavior across time and space. Your role will center on validating and improving these models using GPS tracking data. You will analyze movement patterns relative to landscape structures, land use, and seasonal dynamics, providing key insights for shaping sustainable wildlife and land management strategies.

Your Core Responsibilities:

  • Analyze GPS tag data to examine roosting-feeding distances and seasonal movement.

  • Study goose response to environmental features like roads, buildings, and crops.

  • Quantify habitat preferences and determine grass height limits for grazing.

  • Collaborate with the modeling team to integrate findings into policy-relevant tools.

What You Bring:

  • A PhD in movement ecology or a related biological science.

  • Strong experience in handling large datasets and statistical analysis using R.

  • Motivation to contribute to applied science with direct policy impact.

  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to meet research deadlines.

Why Work at NIOO-KNAW?

Located in Wageningen, one of Europe’s environmental science hubs, the institute offers:

  • A 1-year postdoctoral contract (full-time, 38 hours/week).

  • Gross salary between €3,378 and €5,331/month (depending on experience).

  • Generous benefits: 8% holiday pay, 8.3% year-end bonus, flexible leave (up to 41 days/year), travel & home working allowances, and pension via ABP.
