PhD in Neurodegenerative Diseases

Deadline : September 16, 2025
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem invites applications for a PhD focused on neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Parkinson’s. This project, based at the Ein Kerem Campus under Dr. Ronit Sharon, investigates metabolic and molecular mechanisms of neuronal degeneration.

PhD Opportunity in Parkinson’s Research at Hebrew University of Jerusalem

Are you passionate about advancing our understanding of brain diseases? Do you want to make meaningful scientific contributions in a leading neuroscience lab? The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is offering an exciting PhD position focused on unraveling the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Parkinson’s disease.

Hosted at the renowned Ein Kerem campus—Jerusalem’s premier medical research hub—this PhD is based in the Sharon Lab within the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The lab is part of a vibrant interdisciplinary environment adjacent to Hadassah Hospital and other healthcare departments.

Under the supervision of Dr. Ronit Sharon, an internationally recognized leader in Parkinson’s research, you will explore the roles of alpha-synuclein, lipid metabolism, and signaling pathways (PI3K/AKT/mTOR) in neuronal degeneration. The goal? To uncover early pathological events and novel therapeutic strategies.

Research Themes You’ll Tackle:

  • How misfolded proteins disrupt neuronal metabolism

  • Exploring lipid biology’s role in Parkinson’s

  • Modulating metabolic pathways for therapeutic benefit

  • Linking synaptic dysfunction to neurodegeneration

What We’re Looking For:
You should have a solid academic background in life sciences, neuroscience, biochemistry, or related fields. Strong lab skills in molecular biology, cell culture, imaging (especially confocal microscopy), and data analysis are preferred. Experience with animal models is an asset. Most importantly, you must be eager to learn, self-motivated, and ready to contribute to a collaborative lab culture.

Why Choose Hebrew University?
Founded by figures like Albert Einstein, Hebrew University ranks among the world’s top 100 universities and leads in biomedical research. You’ll join a rich, diverse academic ecosystem—home to 25,000 students including over 2,500 international peers. Jerusalem, your home city, offers a vibrant mix of ancient history and modern energy with endless cultural and social experiences.

Funding & Conditions
This is a fully funded PhD with a monthly stipend ranging from 1900 to 2150 USD, offering financial security and access to excellent academic and lab resources. The position is inclusive and open to international candidates. The lab actively fosters equity, diversity, and cultural exchange.

How to Apply
Applications are due by September 16, 2025 (Asia/Jerusalem time). Submit the following as three separate PDFs:

  1. Motivation letter

  2. CV (with list of publications)

  3. Copy of academic degree(s)
