The Opportunity

We are offering an exciting PhD position in Laser Plasma Acceleration as part of our forward-looking research programs. You will contribute to the development of next-generation compact electron accelerators using ultra-intense lasers, working with an international, interdisciplinary team at the forefront of plasma physics research.


Your Responsibilities

  • Design and execute laser plasma acceleration experiments at DESY
  • Develop novel plasma source technologies for multi-GeV acceleration
  • Collect and analyze experimental data and publish results
  • Collaborate with internal and external researchers in the accelerator community

Who Should Apply?

  • Graduates with a Master’s degree in Physics, Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Strong interest in laser plasma acceleration and compact accelerator technologies
  • Basic programming skills (Python, MATLAB, or C++)
  • Proficient in English and capable of independent and team-oriented work

Note: Doctoral registration will be through the University of Hamburg, as DESY does not confer degrees directly.


Compensation

This position is compensated according to 67% of salary group EG13 of the TVöD (German Federal public sector pay scale). This corresponds to an approximate gross monthly salary of €2,600–€2,800 depending on qualifications and experience.
