Role Overview

European XFEL is looking for an experienced and creative Scientific Writer / Communication Officer to join its Communication Group. In this role, you’ll play a vital part in sharing the organization’s scientific breakthroughs and activities with both public and professional audiences through compelling storytelling and strategic outreach.


Key Responsibilities

  • Write press releases, news stories, website content, brochures, posters, and other communication materials in English and German

  • Build and maintain media relations and monitor press coverage

  • Develop and implement communication strategies in coordination with the team lead

  • Organize media events and facilitate interviews

  • Edit and manage publications such as the Annual Report

  • Update and manage content on the European XFEL website

  • Collaborate with the Social Media Manager and cover their responsibilities during absences

  • Coordinate communication with partner institutions and PR teams

  • Support broader communication and education initiatives


Who Should Apply

  • University degree in journalism, communications, or a scientific field

  • Proven experience in science journalism or public relations

  • Strong writing and editing skills (writing samples required)

  • Native-level proficiency in English or German (with excellent command of the other)

  • Ability to explain complex scientific concepts to non-experts

  • Skilled in managing multiple projects under tight deadlines

  • Familiarity with digital platforms, social media, and MS Office

  • Organized, independent, and proactive communicator
